Man Sentenced to 15 Days in Jail for Fatal Hit-and-Run
A Fayetteville man was sentenced to 15 days in jail Monday after pleading guilty to a hit-and-run last year that killed a 10-year-old boy, authorities said.
Posted — UpdatedJerry Lamons Jr., 27, of 2226 Progress St., pleaded guilty to felony involuntary manslaughter, felony hit-and-run, driving with a revoked license, reckless driving and unsafe passing, authorities said.
Lamons was driving his friend's car without a license on March 31, 2006, when he hit two boys as they crossed Ireland Drive.
Jameel Short, 10, died from his injuries, and 11-year-old Tevin Whitted suffered a broken leg.
Lamons tried to pass two slower vehicles in a no-passing zone and hit the boys, authorities said. He told police he thought he hit something but drove home, washed the car and tried to hammer out the dents.
Lamons' friend noticed the damage to his car and turned Lamons in to police.
As part of a plea agreement, Superior Court Judge Lynn Johnson sentenced Lamons to 19 to 23 months in prison, suspended to 15 days behind bars, and placed him on probation. Lamons also was ordered to pay $6,605 in restitution and perform 50 hours of community service.
