FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A man was rescued Wednesday after being trapped in a 10-foot trench off Raeford Road in Fayetteville.

Firefighters and other emergency personnel worked for more than two hours to shore up the trench and free Alfred Norris, 56, who was buried up to his neck in dirt.

Norris had been checking a hole being dug by a co-worker when the trench, next to a Lowes Home Improvement store on Good Middling Drive, collapsed.

Both men work for Superior Lot Clearing Inc. in Vander.

Norris was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where he was in stable condition Wednesday afternoon, according to Fayetteville Fire Department Battalion Chief Ronald Lewis.

Lewis said representatives from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration will investigate the trench collapse.
