HOPE MILLS, N.C. — A driver hit and killed a Hope Mills man as he walked in the middle of the road Thursday night, authorities said.

The Highway Patrol reported to a call about a body in a ditch along Monticello Avenue just before 10 p.m. They found Vito Ray Ruvino, 36.

Troopers said Catherine Ann Hair, 28, of St. Pauls, hit Ruvino. She surrendered to police in St. Pauls, who called the Highway Patrol.

Her vehicle was found parked at a restaurant about 15 miles away from where Ruvino had been hit, troopers said.

It is unclear why Ruvino was walking in the road, authorities said, but they suspect he had been drinking.

Troopers said they expect to file charges after consulting with the Cumberland County district attorney's on Monday.
