DURHAM, N.C. — Police on Monday were investigating a fatal shooting at a Durham apartment complex.

The shooting occurred shortly before 11 p.m. Sunday at The Oaks at Northgate apartment complex in the 2000 block of Broad Street, police said.

A man, whose name hasn't been released, was shot several times and was found in a breezeway at the complex, police said.

Investigators said they believe robbery was the motive for the shooting, but they had no suspects early Monday.

Officers learned of an attempted armed robbery that had occurred in the complex about five minutes before the shooting. The victim told officers he heard a noise behind him and then felt a gun in his back, and a man patted him down but didn’t take anything from him.

The robber was last seen running toward the building in the complex where the shooting occurred, police said.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Sgt. Jack Cates of the Durham Police Department at 919-560-4440, ext. 262, or CrimeStoppers at 919-683-1200.
