LUMBERTON, N.C. — An unidentified adult male died early Wednesday morning after he removed a passenger window from an Amtrak train and jumped out of the window, an Amtrak spokeswoman said.

The incident, which is still under investigation, occurred in Lumberton near Mount Tabor Road at about 12:30 a.m., Karina Romero said.

Passengers on board the Silver Meteor Train 98, headed to New York from Miami, witnessed the incident and asked that the train stop. The man's body was found about a mile from where the train stopped.

Robeson County authorities pronounced the man, whose identity was not available Wednesday evening, dead at the scene.

The incident delayed at least four other trains. The southbound, New York-to-Miami Silver Meteor was delayed for more than 2 1/2 hours, while the Auto Train was delayed an hour. The Auto Train runs north from Sanford, Fla., to Lorton, Va.

Ramiro did not immediately know how fast the train was traveling but said the posted speed in the area is 79 mph.
