Man hit trying to push disabled car in Fayetteville
A 22-year-old Hope Mills man was seriously injured Thursday after being hit by a drunk driver near the intersection of Bragg Boulevard and Swain Street, police said.
Posted — UpdatedAccording to investigators, Lavardis Whitman and Terekus Rogers, 30, of Fayetteville, were pushing Whitman's Chevrolet Cavalier to the side of the road about 12:30 a.m. after it broke down.
As they pushed the car onto Bragg Boulevard, Whitman and the car were hit by a 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer driven by Jeremy Banaka, police said.
Whitman was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and was in critical condition Thursday afternoon. Rogers was also transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
"It's very hard to see my baby laid up there in the bed," said Elinda Hooks, Whitman's mother.
She said she was expected to cook for her son on Thanksgiving. Instead, she spent the day by his hospital bedside. She said her son is unconscious and his leg is badly hurt.
"I'm suffering, so it's a very hard day for me," she said, tearfully.
Banaka, 23, of Spring Lake, was arrested and charged with DWI.
No other information about the wreck was immediately available, but investigators say more charges could be filed against Banaka.
