Man escapes alleged carjacking; two arrested

A man told Durham police that he was carjacked at gunpoint Wednesday morning, hit over the head and forced to drive to an ATM by two men, but was able to escape and flag down a passing police officer.

DURHAM, N.C. — A man told Durham police that he was carjacked at gunpoint Wednesday morning, hit over the head and forced to drive to an ATM by two men, but was able to escape and flag down a passing police officer.

Durham police arrested Traqwuan Nelson, 18, of Burrell Road, and Alvin Azariah Jones, 21, of South Woodcrest Street, as they sat in the victim's car at The Village Shopping Center on North Miami Boulevard. They charged the men with robbery with a dangerous weapon, first-degree kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and felony conspiracy. Both men were being held in the Durham County Jail under $1 million bond.

The victim told police he was walking to his car at the BP gas station at 2406 Holloway St. at about 1:15 a.m. when Nelson and Jones approached him, showed weapons and forced him into the car. He said they hit him in the head and face with their guns.

The victim was taken to an area hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the tussle.
