FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. — A man fleeing Fuquay-Varina police last weekend died when he lost control of his vehicle and hit a tree, police said Wednesday.

Police stopped Aaron Lameak Hester-Bay, 20, at about 10 p.m. Saturday for driving 86 mph on North Main Street, police said. As an officer approached Hester-Bay's 2002 Mercedes Benz at an Exxon station on the corner of U.S. Highway 401 and Hilltop Road, Hester-Bay drove off at a high rate of speed, police said.

The officer jumped back into his patrol car and attempted to follow Hester-Bay, but he lost sight of the Mercedes on Hilltop Road, police said. The officer continued south on the road and came upon the wrecked Mercedes, which had run off a curve in the road and hit a tree.

Hester-Bay was transported to WakeMed in Raleigh, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The state Highway Patrol is investigating the wreck.
