GREENVILLE, N.C. — A man was arrested Tuesday on charges that he tried to run over a police officer Monday while leaving the scene of a car break-in.

An off-duty officer saw a man breaking into a car in a Target parking lot Monday morning and called for assistance, police said. Officer Alvaro Elias arrived at the scene as the man was attempting to drive off, and when Elias got out of his patrol car, the man tried to run him over, police said.

Elias fired several shots at the car as it drove away, police said.

The vehicle was later found abandoned near Bailey, police said.

Linwood Bernard Murchison has been charged with assault on a government official with a deadly weapon and two counts of breaking, entering and larceny of a motor vehicle.

Elias has been placed on administrative leave with pay while the shooting is reviewed, police said.
