ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — A Rocky Mount man was arrested Thursday on charges that he tried to rape an elderly woman and burglarized her house in June.

Herman Anthony Maynor, 48, was charged with attempted first-degree rape, first-degree burglary and felony larceny. He was placed in the Nash County jail under a $90,000 bond.

The woman told police that she was awakened by the sound of breaking glass 3 a.m. on June 16, then found a strange man in her house. He tried to sexually assault her and then fled with some of her property and money, police said.

Maynor, whose criminal record dates to 1979, has spent more than 15 of the past 22 years in prison, according to state Department of Correction records. He has more than a dozen breaking-and-entering and larceny convictions in Halifax, Edgecombe, Nash and Wilson counties.
