Man charged in Halloween stabbing of UNC student

A man has been charged with stabbing a University of North Carolina student after Chapel Hill's annual Halloween bash, police said Monday.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — A man has been charged with stabbing a University of North Carolina student after Chapel Hill's annual Halloween bash, police said Monday.

Stephen James Howard, 19, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and was placed in the Orange County Jail under a $20,000 secured bond.

An unidentified student was stabbed in the thigh at 106 Big Fraternity Court shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday, police said. The assailant was a white man with a military-style haircut who was dressed in a black robe with a gold cross medallion around his neck, witnesses told police.

The student was treated at UNC Hospitals and released, police said.
