FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Police charged a man Tuesday with an attack on a convenience store clerk.

Anthony Darnell Lee, 31, of 1109 West Drive, was charged with the Nov. 9 beating of Betty Jean Carloni. She was working alone overnight at the Hess-Wilco station at 3706 Raeford Rd. when police say Lee tried to buy a case of beer. When Carloni told him state law prohibited the sale of beer after 2 a.m., Lee allegedly began punching her.

Lee stole some money from the register and some cigarettes before leaving, police said.

Carloni, 50, sustained serious injuries to her face, including fractured bones.

Lee is being held in the Cumberland County jail.
