Man charged in fatal Sanford stabbing

A 31-year-old Sanford man was arrested Monday morning in connection with a fatal stabbing at the Prince Downtown Motel, police said.

SANFORD, N.C. — A 31-year-old Sanford man was arrested Monday morning in connection with a fatal stabbing at the Prince Downtown Motel, police said. 

According to police, Lee Aaron Matthews stabbed Paul David Johnson, 20, in the back around 1:30 a.m. during an altercation at the hotel, which is near the intersection of Carthage and Gulf streets. Johnson was taken to Central Carolina Hospital, where later died, police said. 

Two other people, 19-year-old Angel Ann Kersey and 29-year-old John Mark Legg III, were also injured in the altercation, police said. Kersey was being treated at Central Carolina Hospital Tuesday with a stab wound to the upper chest, and Legg was transported to UNC Hospitals. Their conditions were not available. 

Matthews was charged Monday with murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. 

He was in the Lee County jail Tuesday under no bond. 

No other information about the altercation was released.
