Man charged in Durham shooting death

Brandon Tyrel Jones, 26, of Southpoint Crossing, is charged with murder in the death of Joey Derek Squire.

DURHAM, N.C. — Police said Tuesday that they have charged a Durham man in connection with a fatal shooting Monday afternoon.

Brandon Tyrel Jones, 26, of Southpoint Crossing, is charged with murder in the death of Joey Derek Squire.

Officers responding to a reported disturbance at 2907 Bainbridge Drive found Squire, 24, in a breezeway with a gunshot wound. He later died.

Squire was a senior at North Carolina Central University, majoring in jazz music.

Investigators said Jones and Squire had been involved in a dispute that led to the shooting.

The shooting remains under investigation.
