RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh police have arrested a suspect in connection with an attempted rape last month in which a woman reported that a man tried to attack her after bumping her bicycle with his SUV.

Police said Monday that Philippe Warren Joseph Saieed, 29, of 1536 Sunbow Falls Lane, Apt. 108, Raleigh, was arrested on charges of attempted rape, assault on a female and assault with a deadly weapon in the June 18 attack near Cameron Village.

A 22-year-old woman told police she was riding her bike from a nearby grocery store around 2:30 a.m. when a man, whom police say was Saieed, hit her rear tire with his 2006 Ford Escape.

According to a search warrant for the vehicle, investigators say Saieed then offered her a ride home, but instead of taking her home, he tried to rape her on a residential street. The woman was able to escape.

A man matching his description and the description the woman gave of her attacker had been captured on the grocery store's surveillance video prior to the attack, according to the warrant. Investigators found clothing in the SUV similar to what the man had been wearing – a dark-colored New York Yankees hat, white gym shorts and blue T-shirt.

Police arrested Saieed after North Carolina State University police recognized him from a police alert and from surveillance images released in the media.

They had arrested him on a charge of assault on a female in a March 26 assault case that happened on campus.
