Police said John B. Gooden, who had outstanding warrants in two counties, fled from a routine traffic stop at Barbee Street and Westside Circle.

ZEBULON, N.C. — A routine traffic stop turned into a short high-speed chase on Barbee Street in Zebulon, police said.

Police attempted to pull over a vehicle driven by John B. Gooden, 48, near Barbee Street and Westside Circle. Gooden, of 172 Nasqua Drive, had outstanding warrants for probation violations and traffic offenses in Wake and Nash counties.

Police said Gooden pulled to the side of the road after police turned their lights on, but then put his vehicle into reverse, ramming the parked police vehicle. He then drove away.

The police car sustained minor damage, and the officer in the vehicle was not injured, police said.

Police said Gooden led them on a more than 10-mile chase at speeds up to 80 mph before turning into a church parking lot outside of city limits. Police arrested Gooden there.

Gooden, 48, of 172 Nasqua Drive in Louisburg, was charged with felony speeding to elude arrest, assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer, injury to personal property, driving with a license while revoked and probation violations.

He was being held in the Wake County Jail Sunday under a $63,000 secured bond. His first court appearance was set for Monday.

According to state Department of Correction records, Gooden was placed on probation in 2008 after being convicted of felony larceny and felony breaking-and-entering in Wake County.
