RALEIGH, N.C. — Security administrators at the Wake County Courthouse say a homeless man used scissors to destroy property in a vacant courtroom Wednesday morning.

Ricky Dwayne Griffis, 30, was charged with damage to government property and larceny after he allegedly used shears he found in Courtroom 3-C to slice holes in several chairs, including those for jurors, attorneys and the judge.

He also tried to steal law books, authorities said, but Wake County sheriff's deputies caught him before he got out of the building.

Authorities said they don't believe the case is related to any other case or has to do with any particular judge. They think that Griffis found the courtroom empty and took advantage of the opportunity.

Griffis told deputies that he did it because he has mental issues.
