RALEIGH, N.C. — A man faces charges after he allegedly stabbed a Raleigh convenience store clerk over a bag of Cheetos.

A magistrate's order alleges that Thomas Earl Mercer, 33, of 4137 Sunset Ave., Raleigh, took the jalapeño-flavored snacks, which cost $1.49, and stabbed the woman with a black folding knife when, according to police, she confronted him.

It happened around 3 a.m. Sunday at the Hannah Stop 'N' Shop, at 219 S. Wilmington St.

Mercer was arrested in Moore Square a short time later on felony charges of robbery with a dangerous weapon and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

The 22-year-old woman was taken to a local hospital for treatment of an injury that was not life-threatening.

Mercer was jailed under a $250,000 secured bond.
