Man, 7-year-old boy killed in violent Raleigh wreck
A 22-year-old man and 7-year-old boy died Friday night due to injuries they sustained in a head-on collision near East Millbrook and Six Forks roads, Raleigh police said.
Posted — UpdatedAccording to investigators, Tyeqauze Damar O'Neal was traveling 76 mph westbound on East Millbrook Road about 8:20 p.m. when he lost control of his 1994 Toyota Camry, crossed the center line and hit a 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser that was traveling eastbound. The wreck happened between Burnlee Place and Tralee Place.
Kyrail McLean, 7, was in the car with O'Neal. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck, and O'Neal died from his injuries at WakeMed, police said. According to a wreck report released by authorities, McLean was the only person not wearing a seat belt at the time of the wreck.
Friends and family of the two stopped by the crash site Saturday to leave teddy bears and a basketball.
" I was really really sad. I was hurt, I was shaking. It could be my kids too," said Elanor Odametey, a family friend.
Friends said that O'Neal was driving his nephew home from a basketball game at the time of the crash. Neighbors said they would often call McLean "little Obama" because he was so smart and charming.
Dominique Leeshaun King, another passenger in O'Neal's car, was in good condition Saturday afternoon.
Mackenzie Moore, 19, who was driving the Chrysler at the time of the wreck, was in fair condition at WakeMed Saturday afternoon. A 14-year-old girl who was in Moore's SUV at the time of the wreck was in good condition.
Terrail Taylor told WRAL News she saw O'Neal's Camry traveling very fast prior to the wreck.
"Clearly they were speeding," she said. "(They) lost control of the car, overcorrected, turned and hit the PT Cruiser head on."
The sound of the wreck reverberated throughout the neighborhood and brought people running to see what happened," Taylor said.
Raleigh police released a 911 call Saturday morning from a woman who told dispatchers that one of the cars involved in the wreck was on fire.
In the call, the woman said O'Neal's Toyota was "mangled" and that there was debris from the wreck strewn all over Millbrook Road.
Police closed all lanes of Millbrook Road for about four hours while they investigated the wreck and cleared cars from the area.
The family has started the O'Neal Brothers Memorial Fund at Fifth Third Bank to help pay for burial costs.
