Man, 20, and three 17-year-olds face murder charges for May shooting

Durham police said the four people have been arrested for the May 23 homicide on North Carolina Highway 55 near McCrimmon Parkway.

DURHAM, N.C. — A man and three boys each face a first-degree murder charge for a homicide earlier this year, Durham police said.
Durham police said the four people have been arrested for the May 23 homicide on North Carolina Highway 55 near McCrimmon Parkway.

Artavius Barrett Jr., 20, of Durham and one boy are charged with first-degree murder and felony conspiracy. The other boys are charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Authorities took Barrett to the Durham County jail, where he was held without bond.

Each of the boys is 17. North Carolina law protects the identify of criminal suspects under the age of 18.

Just before 5 p.m. on May 23, police responded to a report of shots fired from a vehicle on N.C. 55 near McCrimmon Parkway.

Bradley Clay, 36, of Durham, was driving the car shot at, police said. Clay crashed into several parked cars in the parking lot of a nearby business. Authorities pronounced Clay dead at the scene.
