Made by Mom Gift Guide: This Little Pigment features tiny, wearable works of art
Andie Freeman, a long-time artist, found a new passion about a year ago when she began creating tiny watercolors for necklaces.
Posted — UpdatedAndie Freeman, a mom of two in Apex, has been creative professionally for about 20 years. The fine arts major has done everything from work in advertising to start a family magazine to paint murals to create large oil paintings.
"I really am obsessed with little things," she tells me.
The two-sided pendants feature everything from the Lucky Strike tower in Durham to squirrels and acorns to peanut butter and jelly. The whimsical pieces are tiny - some measure just one inch or so square. But despite the size, Freeman paints incredible detail in the pieces, using shading and layering.
The jewelry has turned out to be the perfect project for Freeman. She can easily step away from the piece when she's needed. It's not so easy with her larger oil paintings when taking a break could change the entire work.
"I get interrupted a lot as a mom," she tells me. "I can do this in short spurts."
Freeman has plans to grow her offerings, adding mobiles, bracelets, pins and a limited edition series.
"It's a very happy medium," she said. "I like wearing them."
