RALEIGH, N.C. — Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) held an awareness event Saturday at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh.
MADD's Shifting Gears Road Rally and Auto Show raised $25,127, according to its Web site.

“We do believe the message is getting out there,” said Craig Lloyd, MADD's executive director in North Carolina.

Lloyd said drunken driving crashes across the state dropped nearly 20 percent last year. He credits the group's outreach programs for the decline.

“One life we can help save is worth the entire effort,” Lloyd said.

North Carolina still ranks fifth in the U.S. for drunken driving deaths.
