Lynda Loveland: Pierce what?

Every night at dinner, we all sit around the dinner table and talk about our day. My daughter, Carys, loves it. She leads the conversation and than asks everyone else about their day.

Yesterday started off the same. Carys said, “I woke up. I came downstairs. I ate chocolate chip pancakes.” Than she started talking about day care. It sounded pretty typical until she got to the part about wanting to pierce her ears. I stopped chewing. She said one of her friends had her ears pierced and she wanted hers done. As you probably know, Carys is very much a girly girl … and just three years old.

Now, I’m not against parents getting their little kid’s/baby’s ears pierced. That’s their thing. It’s none of my business. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Personally I think it’s just more work. You gotta take care of them (the piercings) and you gotta deal with your kids’ pain.

I don’t remember how old I was when I got my ears pierced but I was at least in middle school, not day care. Carys may want it, but she’s not old enough to make a rational decision about it. She’s three!!! I realize I’m probably being a bit old school. Maybe I’ll give in later, but not now. My husband thinks it’s not a big deal.

Well…it ain’t happening.
