LOUISBURG, N.C. — Franklin County authorities have charged a Louisburg man with fatally shooting his wife over the weekend.

James Fredrick Romine, 48, of 495 John Winstead Road, was charged with second-degree murder. He was being held Monday in the Franklin County Jail without bond.

Deputies responding to a domestic assault call Saturday found Natalie Romine, 41, in the front yard of the couple's home with an apparent gunshot wound to the chest.

Paramedics took Natalie Romine to Franklin Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Investigators said the Romines had been arguing all day, and one or both of them had been drinking. Natalie Romine was about to drive off when James Romine threatened her with a shotgun, and the gun went off as the couple struggled over it, authorities said.

Deputies recovered a 30-30 rifle from the home, authorities said.
