FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Cumberland County District Attorney Ed Grannis plans to retire at the end of the year, when his current term in office ends.

Grannis joined the district attorney's office in 1970 and was first elected district attorney in 1974. He has the second-longest tenure among North Carolina district attorneys, trailing only Mecklenburg County District Attorney Peter Gilchrist.

Grannis faced opposition in only three of his nine campaigns.

No one has yet filed to run for district attorney in the May primaries.
