Local mom, Naptime Creations owner takes over popular consignment sale

Mendy Legleiter is known for her hair bow creations. The mom of two in Wake Forest started making the pieces when her older daughter, now 7, was born.

Friends loved them and the hobby eventually turned into a business that she calls Naptime Creations, because, in the beginning, she was making the bows during naptimes.

Today, the business is nearly a full-time job. And while it keeps her two daughters, the younger one is 2, in hair bows, it also keeps her busy. 

"The joke now is that it is more like 1 or 2 a.m. production time," she tells me. "It definitely has grown outside of naptime."

Rives moved from Raleigh to Orlando last year. She's traveled to Raleigh to run the week-long shows, but has found the travel and time away from her family too tricky. She started looking for a buyer in the spring and eventually landed on Legleiter.

"I think she is going to do an amazing job," Rives told me by email. 

Legleiter is taking the reins of a popular sale that features high-end and boutique children's clothes. You'll find gently used consignment clothes for kids here.

And, through a network of sales that Rives and others have fine-tuned, it also features new overstock clothing from boutique companies. The sales have a relationship with 20 brands. Legleiter will continue to work with the other sales, based in Alabama and Georgia. And they also will start selling her hair bows.

The sale also carries high-end designer bags and purses for moms.

Owning a consignment sale was never on Legleiter's radar, she told me in an interview this week. But DCS, she said, has always been her favorite sale. She's worked as a volunteer and consigned clothing there. For the last four years, she's sold her bows there.

"I have a love for children's clothing," she said. "I love boutique clothing. But I'm not in a position where I can go out and buy $50 or $70 outfits, but I like to dress my girls in a certain way."

Legleiter said Naptime Creations and DCS are a natural fit. Her bows are sold in about 10 stories in the Triangle. And she has booths at shows such as the Junior League's A Shopping Spree and the Cary Academy Holiday Market where she can spread the word about her hair bows and the sales.

Legleiter has plans for DCS. She got some ideas after attending one of the other DCS sales in Georgia and is thinking about adding shoes, books, some toys and furniture at future events.

"I am very excited, honestly," she said. "I have a lot of drive to grow it."

DCS will be held this week at the Falls Pointe Shopping Center at 9660 Falls of Neuse Rd. in Raleigh.
