Local celebrations marking Hanukkah to start this weekend

Hanukkah begins on Tuesday evening this year. There are several celebrations to mark the holiday, the eight-day Jewish festival, in the Triangle.

Here's where to find them:

The Levin Jewish Community Center will host a community-wide Hanukkah Festival from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Sunday, at the center at 1937 Cornwallis Rd. in Durham. The event includes homemade latkes and other treats, Hanukkah games, activities, crafts, music, dancing and more.

Barnes & Noble book stores will offer a special reading of Woody Guthrie's new book and CD "Honeyky Hanukah" at several stores starting this Sunday through Dec. 20. The events include some hands-on activities.

Quail Ridge Books & Music in Raleigh will hold its annual family Hanukkah concert with Mishpacha at 2 p.m., Sunday.

Crabtree Valley Mall has a nightly menorah lighting. The first one is at 5 p.m., Tuesday. It's in the upper level across from Sears.

Apex will once again host a big celebration during Chanukah Wonderland and the lighting of an outdoor nine-foot menorah. The event is a project of Chabad of Cary. It's open to all. Chanukah Wonderland is Dec. 21 to Dec. 23 at Halle Cultural Arts Center in downtown Apex. Kids and adults can learn more about the holiday through a hands-on olive press demonstration, a dreidel bounce house, and a computer center. Activities include creating your own wooden menorah, designing a clay dreidel and decorating a donut. For young kids, there's a toddler corner and story hour. It's 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Dec. 21, and 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Dec. 22 and Dec. 23. The cost is $5 per child and includes all crafts and activities. (It's free for adults).

Starting at 4:15 p.m., Sunday, The Rogers Park Band will play holiday music and Jewish classics. After the concert, the community is invited to see the lighting of the menorah at 220 N. Salem St., Apex. Throughout the holiday, Chabad also will light the menorah at 5:30 p.m. each night.

Cary's Jewish Cultural Festival is 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., Dec. 22, at the Cary Arts Center. A nine-foot menorah will be lit at 5 p.m. There also will be hands-on activities for kids, traditional and Kosher Jewish food, entertainment, singers and a Klezmer band.
