Local animal welfare group hits spay/neuter surgery milestone

A local animal welfare group is celebrating a big achievement in helping reduce pet overpopulation.

SNAP-NC recently performed its 100,000th spay/neuter surgery. They hit the milestone Thursday during a partnership with the Animal Protection Society of Durham.

The Durham APS kicked off a special voucher program on World Spay Day on Feb. 24. They are offering Durham residents $20 vouchers for a spay/neuter surgery at a partner veterinary clinic. It’s a procedure that can cost between $100 and $300. The APS of Durham pays the remaining costs. With SNAP-NC's low-cost spay/neuter services, the cost for surgery and medical care is an average of $119.

The shelter contracted with SNAP-NC to perform the discounted spay/neuter surgeries for three specific dates: March 12, March 26 and April 16.

Thursday, the groups were able to provide surgeries for 29 animals. It was during that time SNAP-NC performed its 100,000th surgery. There are currently 27 more cat appointment slots to fill for the two remaining days. Currently, all dog appointments have been filled.

Pet owners need to bring proof of residency, pay the $20 fee and the APS will schedule surgery for one of the two remaining dates. The Animal Protection Society of Durham has provided thousands of vouchers for low-cost spay/neuter surgeries over the years, but did not have a specific number of vouchers handed out.
