DURHAM, N.C. — Animal rescue groups are offering post-Thanksgiving specials, hoping that deal-seeking shoppers will bring home a new furry friend for the holidays.
Independent Animal Rescue held a Black Cat Friday show at the PetCo store in Durham. It featured more than a dozen black cats and kittens.

"We really wanted a day to feature them, and somehow we thought, 'You know, Black Friday, black cats,'" volunteer Eliana Brazda said.

Black cats and dogs are often overlooked and have the hardest time finding homes, she said.

"We find that people are drawn to the ones with colors," Brazda said.

Second Chance Pet Adoptions, the Triangle's oldest no-kill shelter, is offering a $5 adoption special on all cats five months or older.

The special runs noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at the group's adoption center at 6003 Chapel Hill Road Suite 133 in Raleigh.

Another $5 cat adoption will be held 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on Dec. 3 at the Petsmart, 2430 Walnut St. in Cary.
