RALEIGH, N.C. — Is your new year's resolution to exercise wearing thin because of pain and discomfort? The solution to your resolution may be in a weightless and wet environment.

Swim coach Catherine Baldwin says a rigorous swim routine yields greater lung capacity and flexibility to perform well in other activities. And unlike most exercise, water offers benefits for sore and tired joints.

"I like the fact that you can exercise and be almost pain-free," Baldwin said.

Water resistance also makes the workout more efficient. Some say one hour of exercise in the water is like two hours on the ground.

However, before starting any new workout routine – on the ground or in the water – you should check with your doctor to see if any conditions might limit your activity.
