Posted — UpdatedOn Saturday, Oct. 13, the Town of Cary celebrates one aspect of the region's international diversity at the Diwali Festival of Lights at Regency Park.
Diwali is the most widely celebrated Hindu festival and marks the victory of good over evil and the beginning of the New Year in Indian culture. Diwali is a centuries-old holiday practiced by many faiths that celebrates life and strengthens family relationships.
The theme this year is “Kalanjali — A Tribute to Art.” In celebration of this holiday, the Town of Cary Parks and Hum Sub Inc. will pay tribute to Indian art that defines, distinguishes and also unites the people of India. The event will include classical and folk Indian music and dance shows, skits, a bazaar with handmade crafts and clothing, a variety of Indian foods, henna tattoos and Diwali exhibits throughout the day.
Highlights of the day include the inauguration and “Lighting of the Lamp” ceremony at 12:30 p.m. A Band of Boys, one of India’s hottest new music groups, will perform its American debut at 6 p.m. A fireworks display, beginning at 8 p.m., will close out the festival.
No matter what draws visitors to the Diwali festival, they are guaranteed a glimpse into 5,000 years of culture. The carnival-like atmosphere provides a fun opportunity to interest children in the culture of another nation as well as strengthen family ties.
