Most residents of Hillsborough and northern Orange County attend Orange County Schools, which are in close proximity to several major universities and two-year colleges. The district is comprised of 10 schools that serve more than 6,000 students at six elementary schools, two middle schools and two high schools, one of which—Cedar Ridge High School—offers an International Baccalaureate Diploma. The district also is in the process of constructing a third middle school that is scheduled to open in the fall of 2006.

Orange County Schools are proud of the coordinated efforts of teachers and students, principals and administrators, support staff and community supporters that have helped the district to achieve successes such as:
  • Having two schools named as Honor Schools of Excellence and four as Schools of Distinction, including both high schools
  • A district-wide elementary Spanish program
  • SAT scores with an average of 1047—above state and national levels
  • Nearly one out of five teachers have earned National Board Certification
  • “Fast Forward” and advanced placement programs
  • Pre-kindergarten classes, a Kindergarten Academy and MiC.A.S.A. after-school program
  • A comprehensive K-12 Academically Gifted Program
  • Programs and services for special needs children
  • Excellent athletic facilities for team sports
  • College partnership programs, including Prestigious Career and Technical Education programs
  • Collaboration with Durham Public Schools and Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools in the Middle College High School at Durham Technical Community College, offering dual enrollment
