Chapel Hill-Carrboro Public Schools continue to surpass national standards for academic excellence while providing students with high-quality education in safe, stimulating and nurturing environments. And the district can boast many accomplishments that few others can claim.

Based on average SAT scores, along with student participation in advanced placement courses, number of National Merit Scholars and similar data, Newsweek in 2005 once again listed both Chapel Hill High School and East Chapel Hill High among the top 100 high schools in the nation.

Although the district is located within Orange County, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools belong to an administrative unit separate from Orange County Schools. The district operates nine elementary schools, four middle schools and two high schools, with a third high school scheduled to open in the fall of 2007.

Serving more than 10,000 students, the district’s schools are mostly neighborhood schools, with strong parent and community participation working to help children achieve their potential. And there is little doubt that academic inspiration is provided by the district’s close proximity to several higher learning institutions, including the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University.

Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools strive to provide an environment that nurtures and supports learning and utilizes enrichment strategies to ensure all students are successful. This effort includes the Hospital School, located within the University of North Carolina (UNC) Hospitals complex, allowing students to continue their studies with as little interruption as possible while they are patients. Additionally, high school students enrolled in the district also have the opportunity to attend the Middle College High School at Durham Technical Community College to earn credit toward a post-secondary certificate, diploma or associate's degree.
