A Camp Lejeune Marine died in Afghanistan Monday while on combat operations, officials said Tuesday.

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — A Camp Lejeune Marine died in Afghanistan Monday while on combat operations, officials said Tuesday.

Cpl. William J. Cooper, 22, of Eupora, Miss., a member of Weapons Company of the 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force, was conducting combat operations in Helmand Province when he was killed, officials said.

Cooper joined the Marine Corps in December 2004.
