Lejeune Marine, Fort Bragg soldier killed in Afghanistan

A Camp Lejeune Marine and a Fort Bragg soldier were both killed in Afghanistan this week, the military announced Wednesday.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A Camp Lejeune Marine and a Fort Bragg soldier were both killed in Afghanistan this week, the military announced Wednesday.

Sgt. Charles C. Strong, 28, of Suffolk, Va., died in Herat province on Monday while conducting combat operations. No details of his death were provided, but the Reuters news agency reported that an unidentified member of the Afghan security forces threw a grenade at his trainers.

Strong was assigned to 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion, Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command.

Maj. Michael J. Donahue, 41, of Columbus, Ohio, was killed in action on Tuesday. The military did not provide any details of his death, including where in Afghanistan he was killed.

Donahue, a paratrooper, was an operations support officer with C Company, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, XVIII Airborne Corps.
