JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — The commanding officer of Camp Lejeune’s 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit was charged with shoplifting from a local Walmart over the weekend, police said Tuesday.

Col. Robert Gerald Petit, 50, of 2113 St. Mary's Drive on Camp Lejeune, was arrested Saturday evening. Police said they didn't didn't seize any items when he was taken into custody, and no information was released regarding what he was accused of stealing.

Petit assumed command of the Marine Expeditionary Unit in September. There was no immediate word on his status with the Marine Corps.

In October, the corps relieved Col. Douglas Denn, the commander of the Cherry Point air station, of his duties after he was charged with drunken driving.
