SANFORD, N.C. — The Lee County Sheriff's Office fired one jail officer and arrested another Tuesday after they were linked to inmates who had cellphones in the county jail.

On April 3, four inmates at the Lee County Jail were charged with possession of the phones. An investigation linked two jail officers to the phones and both lost their jobs.

Robert Ellis Fleming, 35, 122 Big Man Drive in Sanford was charged with providing an inmate with a cellphone and other contraband, and with receiving a bribe.

He was being held in Lee County Jail under $50,000 secured bond.

The sheriff's office did not identify the other jail officer, who has not been charged but did lose his job.

The investigation is ongoing.
