Posted — UpdatedThe Wade Edwards Learning Lab in Raleigh is launching a free computer science program for teens, especially young women, this week.
Hi Tech Teens is offered in partnership with Women in Computer Science, a group at N.C. State, to encourage teens to succeed in technology, raise academic self-esteem and confidence, and inspire expectations of high achievement and success, according to a press release.
A girls only session runs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Thursdays, starting this week through March 19. A co-ed session meets at 10 a.m. to noon, Saturdays, from this Saturday to March 21.
"Hi-Tech Teens seeks to remove the preconceived notions of computer science, a male-dominated field, by encouraging young women to explore programming in a gender-friendly environment," the release says. "We aim to remove any barriers caused by economic status, requiring no registration fee or membership fee to participate in Hi-Tech Teens. Each week, for six weeks, students will complete hands-on programming projects, work in a collaborative learning environment, and have opportunities to talk with professionals currently working in technology fields."
