RALEIGH, N.C. — State Rep. Ty Harrell and his wife have separated amidst allegations he has engaged in extramarital affairs, according to court documents.

Melanie Dupon is seeking custody of the couple's two sons, child support and alimony in a petition, which was filed last Friday.

Harrell, D-Wake, told WRAL News that he was surprised by the filing.

"This came totally out of the blue," he said. "This is obviously a difficult time for us. My wife and I are separated.”

He said he and his wife remain focused on the well-being of their sons.
