Lawmaker charged after fight over campaign sign

State Rep. Van Braxton has been charged with simple assault and communicating threats following a fight with a Lenoir County man over a campaign sign, authorities said Tuesday.

KINSTON, N.C. — State Rep. Van Braxton has been charged with simple assault and communicating threats following a fight with a Lenoir County man over a campaign sign, authorities said Tuesday.

Ray Wiley sought the charges against Braxton, D-Lenoir, on Friday, following a Nov. 4 confrontation with the lawmaker over a defaced campaign sign in Wiley's yard.

Braxton is scheduled to appear in court on the charges on Dec. 16.
