Laurinburg man faces more dog-fighting charges

Frank Jacobs, 69, of 8600 Ray Locklear Road, was initially charged with animal cruelty and being a spectator at a dog fight. He now faces seven counts of promoting a dog-fighting event and one count of possessing a dog with the intent to train it for a dog fight.

State and federal agents searched a home at 3541 McLeod Drive in Maxton on Saturday and seized tens of thousands of dollars in cash, multiple handguns, various controlled substances, veterinary drugs and dog-fighting paraphernalia, authorities said.

Eighteen dogs also were seized, including several that had serious wounds and scars from previous injuries.

Authorities arrested 27 people during the raid, including some from South Carolina, Maryland and Ohio.

After the raid, authorities searched Jacobs' home and said they found evidence linking Jacobs to multiple organized, large-scale dog fighting operations.

Thirteen dogs found there were being trained for future fights, authorities said, and many of them showed signs of injury and scars from previous fights.

Authorities said they also seized two tread mills, one springer pole, documents showing past dog fights, a variety of controlled substances and several quarts of moonshine.
