RALEIGH, N.C. — About a dozen students at Raleigh's Lacy Elementary School arrived Thursday morning in a military transport vehicle, earning cheers in the carpool line.

Muzzy Crumpler said her sons, second graders Webb and Ward, rode along with her husband and other students and fathers.

The fathers paid for seats on the 1965 Army truck as part of a silent auction to raise money for the school. Carter Hunt, father of three Lacy grads and a USO volunteer, supplied the ride.

Crumpler said the vehicle made three stops, picking up children and parents before arriving at school. Her husband reported about 50 students greeted their arrival.
