Labor Day storms rattle; rain streams through central NC
The long Labor Day weekend ended Monday the same way it started - with warm, humid conditions that brought sudden heavy downpours and dazzling lightning shows.
Posted — UpdatedWRAL meteorologist Mike Maze said some storms turned severe in the afternoon hours and radar was indicating two hot spots that could flare up throughout the evening.
"It looks like tonight's storms will die down before midnight and we shouldn't hear any rumbling overnight," Maze said.
Durham, Orange and Person counties saw a band of strong to severe storms that prompted a flood advisory for the area, which remains in effect until 8:30 p.m.
Eastern Orange County got 2 to 3 inches of rain during afternoon downpours, Maze said. Minor flooding is possible in low-lying areas.
Smaller storm cells crossed parts of Wake, Franklin, Warren, Johnston, Wayne and Nash counties as well. A lightning strike was reported at a home on Sue Ellen Drive in Raleigh. Information about the extent of damage and possible injuries was not released.
Farther south, a strong storm system moved into Moore County around 6 p.m., bringing the threat of severe weather.
The temperature peaked at about 85 degrees Monday afternoon in Raleigh.
The unsettled conditions continue through the work week, with warm afternoons and the chance for storms each day.
