Kwanzaa marked with events in Cary, Durham this week

The event will feature the Chuck Davis African American Dance Ensemble and more.

We have a few Kwanzaa events this week.

The 17th annual Cary Kwanzaa! will honor African-American people and their heritage this week.

The celebration, which is free and open to the public, starts at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Cary Arts Center. The theme this year is "The Golden Years: Paying Tribute and Honoring Our Elders." It features the Chuck Davis African American Dance Ensemble, singers Louise Toppin and Michael Gordon and Ghanaian drummer Kwabena Osei Appiagyei. There also will be a vendor marketplace.

A Kwanzaa celebration is planned for noon to 6 p.m., Friday, at the Holton Career and Resource Center, 401 N. Driver St., Durham. There will be food and family fun. For details, call 919-354-2750.

Davis and the African American Dance Ensemble also will perform at Kwanzaafest at the Durham Armory. The event begins at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Doors open at noon. It is free and open to the public.
