RALEIGH, N.C. — Eating a dozen donuts and then going for a 2.5 mile run might not sound like a great morning, but there is something about the Krispy Kreme Challenge that makes it seem pretty normal.

The annual challenge combines running, donut eating and some pretty great costumes all to help raise money for the North Carolina Children's Hospital.

Registration opened Sunday morning for the 2014 Krispy Kreme Challenge, scheduled for Feb. 8.

The annual event began in 2004 as a dare between a few North Carolina State University undergrads. Run from the campus bell tower to the Krispy Kreme and eat a dozen donuts, then run back. Sophomore Ben Gaddy was the first winner with a time of 34 minutes and 27 seconds.

It has only grown from there. Even making it onto Sports Illustrated’s “102 More Things You Gotta Do Before You Graduate.”

You can race alone or in teams. We highly suggest working on your costume now. There have been some great ones through the years.

Runners participate in the costume contest at the 2013 Krispy Kreme Challenge.
There are 8,100 spots available for the 2014 race, and they go fast so register in advance.

Registration is $28 for N.C. State students and $35 for non-N.C. State students through Dec. 31. After that, registration prices goes up.

Last year, the race raised $184,000 for the NC Children's Hospital. In its history, the race has raised more than half a million dollars for the hospital.
