KNIGHTDALE, N.C. — Knightdale Police Chief and Public Safety Director Shawn Brown resigned Thursday, according to the town, but the reason was not released.

"I want to thank Shawn for his service to the town since 2009. This was a mutual decision, a difficult decision, and I wish Shawn and his family the very best going forward," Town Manager Seth Lawless said in a statement.

Brown will receive three months' salary, health insurance and accumulated vacation leave as severance, Lawless said. Assistant Police Chief Jason Godwin has been named interim chief of police.

Brown previously worked in Farmington, Conn., where he was a police sergeant and former captain of the Avon Fire Department.
