Kindie rock group Lunch Money headed to Chapel Hill

I've been a long-time fan of the group that plays some truly happy music for families - all about cookies as big as your head, a trip to the library, balloons and tiny dinosaurs. My two-year-old regularly requests "I Love My Library" from their CD "Dizzy."

They've released four CDs since 2004, including "Spicy Kid" in June (shortly after the group played at The ArtsCenter in Carrboro).

In the latest CD, the group explores the parent-child relationship, making it as much an album for parents as kids. Lead singer Molly Ledford wrote ten original songs based on her experiences as a mom. All were immediately identifiable for me.

There's "Translator" where she sings about serving as a translator for a young child who is still mainly intelligible to her parents.

"One day you will have great conversations. One day you might give a speech that wows the entire nation. But until then I'm the lucky one who listens everyday. And I will translate," Ledford sings.

In "S-P-E-L-L," I learned my two-year-old isn't the only kid who has attempted to spell words just like mommy and daddy when they are trying to talk in code (as in spelling words like N-A-P or I-C-E C-R-E-A-M when you don't want the kids to know what you're talking about).

"It's either bad news or a dessert," Ledford sings the kid's lament.

Other songs explore a walk in the rain, falling asleep on a road trip and time outs. They all tell sweet stories about those little moments of childhood - the kind, for the most part, that make it so enjoyable when we slow down and think about it.
