You might know of Willa Brigham from her popular show for kids on WRAL-TV called Smart Start Kids. Brigham, a musician and storyteller, encourages kids to share stories and sing songs and takes them to places across the state. It's great for kids ages 3 to 5.

But Brigham of Cary also explores another way to tell stories: through her quilts. An exhibit of Brigham's quilts opens Friday at the Scrap Exchange in Durham. The exhibit called "I Used to Be Something Else" runs until March 16. The Cary quilter says she can't bear to see clothing items thrown out when they've still got life in them. So she recycles items such as old shirts, skirts, curtains and pants to create her quilts.

“I love the fact that it has had a life and I’m giving it another life before it goes to that recycle bin in the sky,” said Brigham, a member of the African American Quilt Circle. She hopes that her quilts encourage visitors to think about their own recycling habits.

A kid-friendly reception to open the exhibit will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the Scrap Exchange on Foster Street in Durham. Brigham, a past Scrap Exchange board and staff member, plans to perform some of her songs for kids. And there will be a sing-a-long of her new Scrap Exchange song.

The gallery is open during Scrap Exchange store hours: Monday through Wednesday and Friday from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.; Thursday from 11 a.m.-6 p.m.;  Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free.

For information, call 919-688-6960, or go to the Scrap Exchange's website.
