BURLINGTON, N.C. — A Burlington man faces kidnapping charges in connection with the Friday night abduction of three children, police said Monday.

Detarrio Antwann Yarbor is accused of assaulting his 24-year-old girlfriend in the parking lot of a Walmart on Garden Road and then leaving with her three children, a 5-year-old girl, 4-year-old boy and 4-month-old girl.

The North Carolina Center for Missing Persons issued an Amber Alert for the children, and Rowan County deputies arrested Yarbor on Interstate 85. He told deputies that he had dropped the children off at the home of a relative in Burlington, and the children were found unharmed at the home.

Police said that further investigation shows Yarbor left the three children in the middle of a street in Burlington before fleeing. The 5-year-old girl was able to find their grandmother's house and then led family members to the younger children, according to investigators.

Yarbor, 32, of Cleveland Avenue, has been charged with three counts of first-degree kidnapping. He initially was charged with three counts of child abduction and one count each of assault on a female and assault on a child under 12.

He remained in jail Monday under a $300,000 bond.
