RALEIGH, N.C. — A North Carolina State Fair worker suffered a minor injury Thursday afternoon when a children's ride malfunctioned.

The Early Bird ride broke down at about 2 p.m. Thursday, and the unidentified worker was struck on the leg as he climbed in to stop the ride.

Three adults and seven children were on the ride at the time, but none was injured. Initial reports indicated that a metal arm on the ride broke, but there were no indications that the malfunction was a result of setup or operation, authorities said.

The worker was walking around when authorities arrived, but he was taken to the Red Cross center at the fairgrounds to be evaluated. He later returned to work.

The state Department of Labor said the ride was immediately shut down and sent back to the manufacturer in Ohio.
